The Boiler Upgrade Scheme in 2026:what the £7,500 grant actually covers
The BUS is open, with £7,500 towards air source or ground source heat pumps, and £9,000 for off-grid oil and LPG homes until 31 March 2027. We walk through eligibility, what counts as an 'installation', and the paperwork that determines whether your application is approved first time.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was extended and the grant amount increased to £7,500 for air source heat pumps. But the eligibility criteria also changed. Not every home qualifies, and the scheme's conditions mean some properties are better suited than others.
The rules have loosened twice. Since 8 May 2024, outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation no longer rule a home out, and for applications made from 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer a condition of the grant. If your home has a valid EPC, its certificate number still goes on the application. Insulation is now advice rather than a rule, and it is still good advice: a well-insulated home lets a heat pump run cooler, and cheaper.
