Cavity wall insulation – everything you need to know
Although effective in preventing external moisture from penetrating your internal walls, the design of cavity walls can prove problematic in terms of insulation. They feature two layers with a gap between the inner and outer wall which often leaves space for hot air to escape, making it harder to heat your room and maintain the temperature once you turn your heating off. Cavity wall insulation can work to resolve this, filling the gap to lock in heat for a home that’s warmer for longer.
According to Energy Saving Trust, the proper installation of cavity wall insulation could save you over £400 on your annual heating costs (based on fuel prices from October 2023), meaning more money in your pocket without compromising your comfort.

Whilst the benefits of cavity wall insulation are manifold, we appreciate that the installation can be expensive. However, under the government’s ECO4 (Energy Companies Obligation) scheme, you could be entitled to get this improvement absolutely free. Contact Smart Energie Ltd to discuss your eligibility.
Hassle-free installations
Once we’ve confirmed cavity wall insulation is the best approach for your property, insulation material can be injected directly into the gap through small holes which are drilled in the outside of the wall. The holes are then sealed for a smooth finish and exceptional results with limited fuss or mess.
How do you know if you have a cavity wall?
-
Measure – Stand by your window or door and use a tape measure to determine the distance between the inside wall and the external wall. If the measurement is over 260mm thick, you most likely have cavity walls.
-
External brick pattern – Cavity walls are usually very uniform with all brick laid longways.
-
Age – If your house was built after the 1920s, it’s probably going to have cavity walls.
Unsure if you have insulation already and don’t know how to check? Your property’s EPC (energy efficiency) rating is a good place to start. If this is high, between an A or C, there’s a good chance you have some form of insulation already in place. If it’s much lower, it’s time to contact Smart Energie Ltd and learn how we can change that!
